There’s a high probability that you miss some of the most important tasks. Some of these tasks may never have been done!

Below is a list of the 6 Most Overlooked Spring Cleaning Tasks that everyone should add to their checklist.

1) Change or Clean Filters

HVAC Filter: To maintain optimal air quality in your home, replace your system’s filter seasonally.

Furnace Humidifier Filter: These are easily forgettable or you may not know that they need to be replaced! Consult your manual.

2) Check All Vents

Foundation Vents & Attic Vents: Look for missing or damaged screens, debris, or signs of insect or rodent infestation.

Dryer Vent: A plugged dryer vent can cause your dryer to run inefficiently & could also cause a house fire.

Dryers that are centrally located are prone to clogging from lint or pests. Strong odor & longer drying times can be a signs of an issue.

3) Safety Equipment

Make sure you have the following at your property:

  1. Fire Extinguishers: Learn how to use them!
  2. Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Check the manual to determine when there may be an issue.
  3. Smoke Detectors: Have one on each level of the home.

Check the expiration date on all of these devices.

4) Clean Out Window Wells

Be sure to remove any debris from the window wells.

Debris can clog the wells allowing water to build up. The pressure from the water can leak though a poorly sealed basement window or even break the window.

Water can than pour into the basement & cause damage.

5) Check Your Water Heater

Over time, sediment can build up in your water heater tank. This can cause discoloration to the water along with other problems.

Have your water heater maintenance or drain the water heater to remove any potential sediment.

6) Test the Sump Pump or Risk a Flood

During the Spring months here in Upstate NY we get an abundance of rain & storms. This large amount of rain can cause basement flooding.

Check your pump at least a couple times a year to ensure that it is working properly.

Dump water into the basin to make sure the pump turns on & removes the water.

Add to Your Spring Cleaning Check List

This Spring when you pull out your checklist be sure to add the above tasks.

By completing these tasks you can avoid serious damage to your home such as flooding, fire, or mold.
