Home Preparation: Vacation | Summer is in full swing! During the summer many people take a vacation and leave home for an extended period of time. Some make plans for others to watch their dog, feed their cat, or take out the trash. However, there are many things inside and outside your home that should be taken into consideration before leaving for vacation.

Below is a home preparation list to ensure that your home is ready and prepared for your departure. Vacation is a time to relax and be worry free. Therefore, by taking certain measures to prepare your home, you will avoid coming home to a disaster.

1. Check Water and Plumbing

If you’re leaving for a long period of time, shut off the water valves connected to appliances to prevent any leaks or broken hoses.

In the winter, keep the main water valve on to prevent your pipes from freezing and/or bursting. protection. Insulate exterior pipes to also prevent freezing.

2. Unplug Appliances

Unplug electronics like computers, TVs, microwaves, toasters etc. By unplugging you can prevent excess power usage and  reduce risk of an electrical fire.

If there is ever a power surge it could damage these items. If  you have a garage door it could open on its own.

3. Program Your Thermostat

Setting your thermostat ensures that your home stays at a safe temperature and humidity level.

Furthermore, it prevents from wasting energy and money on cooling or heating your home.

  • In summer, an ideal temperature range is around 82 to 85 degrees.

  • In winter, an ideal temperature range is around 60 to 65 degrees.

4. Protection Against Crime

Take these steps to protect your home against crime:

 

  • Lock all windows, doors, and gates.

  • Install motion-sensor lights around your home’s exterior as well as timer lights in the interior.

  • Install cameras, alarm systems and other security features.

  • Have a neighbor of friend check on home, bring in mail, cut grass, etc.

5. Prepare For Your Return

To ensure relaxation when you get home you should do these following tasks before you leave:

  • Empty fridge and garbage from leaving an odor.

  • Clean gutters to prevent foundation flooding.

  • Trim trees to avoid home damage.
  • Leave the pool pump on and covered to avoid algae growth.
  • Have your roof inspected for cracks to avoid water damage & possible mold growth.
  • Secure outdoor items from blowing away or becoming damaged.
